Known as one of Ghana’s leading mining companies, Anglo Gold Ashanti (AGA) is positioning agriculture as a key driver of economic development, creating opportunities for local communities to explore other parts of the value chain beyond farming.
It is holding an Agrifair to promote agriculture and celebrate farmers in its host community, Obuasi.
The maiden Agrifair, scheduled to happen on October 16, 2026, coincides with World Food Day. The event will serve as a platform for farmers and agro-processors to exhibit their products.
Under the theme “Innovating Today, Nourishing Tomorrow: Building Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security and Economic Growth in Obuasi,” the Agrifair is expected to draw about 40 vendors.
The Economic Development Superintendent, Mr Daniel Arthur Bentum, who spoke on behalf of AGA, said the upcoming Agrifair was intended to complement the company’s support for the National Farmers’ Day celebration happening on December 4.
The AGA Economic Development Officer, Madam Annette Akua Akonnor, also said the October 16 Agrifair is happening at the forecourt of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly and will draw farmers and agro-processors from the Obuasi and Obuasi East Municipalities.
The event is a collaboration with the Agriculture Departments of both Assemblies, aiming to boost agricultural production.
Beyond showcasing agro products, there will be a cooking competition between the two municipalities and musical performances.
Meanwhile, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Faustilove Appiah Kannin, commended AngloGold Ashanti when the organising team of the Agrifair paid a courtesy call ahead of the event.
While welcoming the development, Appiah Kannin said it would help boost the local economy and showcase Obuasi’s agricultural potential beyond its mining activities.
She further commended AGA for its continued support towards farmers, including Farmers’ Day celebrations, the recently launched piggery project at Sanso and the company’s farmer support scheme.
She expressed the Assembly’s continued support for the Agrifair and expressed the hope that it would become a sustainable platform for promoting agriculture and agro-processing.
