In response to Dr. Randy Abbey’s recent appointment as the Acting CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), opinions among Ghanaian citizens, including cocoa farmers, have varied significantly.
Randy Abbey, a prominent broadcast journalist with a background in sports, has been labelled by some as an unconventional choice for the role. On social media, particularly Facebook, reactions have been mixed.
Some users expressed a preference for him as “the TV presenter who asked the toughest questions,” while others are optimistic, believing he has the potential to be “the unconventional leader who will introduce innovation, creativity, and transformational leadership to steer COCOBOD towards positive economic and social development.”
A Facebook subscriber, Godwin Yidana, opined that “at this point in our country’s history, conventional ways of doing things have not gotten us anywhere. We need unconventional, innovative, creative and transformative leadership to reset our dear country on the path of positive economic, political and social transformation.
Business as usual won’t cut it. If we do things the same way we have been doing since the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah, we will get the same results—an impoverished nation heavily reliant on the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and World Bank continue to exploit our country through imperialist draconian conditional packages.”
Another Facebook user, Kwame Oduro Amazing, said: “…Randy is a good man by all standards, but that area isn’t his territory.”
Meanwhile, some cocoa farmers across the nation have equally echoed these sentiments, recognising the ace broadcaster’s appointment as unconventional but expressing hope that his leadership could drive the necessary transformation in the cocoa sector.
The cocoa industry is currently facing significant challenges, including declining production, smuggling, and pricing issues, prompting stakeholders to call for bold and effective solutions, and the Ghanaian people hope to see significant improvements in these areas.

Before his recent appointment, he was the host of “Good Morning Ghana” on Metro TV.
