The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku has convened a meeting with various Regional Ministers to discuss the government’s agricultural strategies.
During the meeting, Hon. Opoku emphasized the government’s recent initiatives to strengthen the agricultural sector. Key areas of focus included improvements to irrigation systems, the promotion of crop diversification, and support for smallholder farmers. The Regional Ministers agreed on the significance of these initiatives, noting their alignment with regional development priorities.
While acknowledging the challenges facing the agricultural sector such as pests and diseases, climate variability, and insufficient storage facilities participants stressed the urgency of addressing these issues.
The ministers proposed enhanced training and resources for farmers as part of the response.
A crucial point of the discussion was the modernisation of agricultural practices. Hon. Opoku proposed collaboration with research institutions to introduce innovative farming techniques and technologies that can boost productivity, while also underscoring the importance of ongoing education and training for farmers.
Food security remained a central concern for the government, as highlighted by Hon. Opoku. Strategies proposed included expanding community gardens, establishing food banks, and promoting cooperative farming.
All Ministers agreed on the need to monitor food supply chains to ensure that essential food items are accessible to citizens, particularly during periods of scarcity.
The Regional Ministers also explored opportunities for attracting investment into the agricultural sector, specifically in areas like agro-processing and value addition. Hon. Opoku endorsed this initiative and suggested organizing investment forums to showcase regional opportunities to potential investors.
The meeting between the agric minister and the Regional Ministers was a productive dialogue aimed at strengthening agricultural policies and initiatives within the regions. By addressing current challenges and considering innovative solutions, both parties demonstrated a unified commitment to advancing the agricultural sector, ensuring food security, and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers across the regions.
