The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), under the Feed Ghana Programme has donated 1,000 bags of fertilizer to vegetable farmers in the Adenta and Ga East municipalities. This marks a significant step toward strengthening urban agriculture and enhancing food security within Accra’s metropolitan areas.
The intervention was led by Deputy Minister Hon. John Dumelo in collaboration with the Feed Ghana Programme Coordinator, Mr. Bright Kwadwo Demodzi, following Metro and Original TV’s programme called ‘Akuafo Mo’, which identified the needs of these farmers at the Adenta and Ga East Municipal.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony at Trasaco on May 15th, 2025, Hon. Dumelo emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting farmers in urban and peri-urban communities. He noted that many farmers in Accra are often overlooked in national agricultural policy, despite their crucial role in feeding local populations and contributing to food supply chains.
Hon. Dumelo noted that urban farmers are just as important as those in rural areas and they must be equiped with the tools and resources they need to succeed. He added that the fertilizer distribution is part of a broader agenda to boost vegetable production and reduce the country’s reliance on food imports.
Farmers receiving the fertilizers welcomed the support and highlighted ongoing challenges such as land encroachment, limited access to irrigation, and the high cost of inputs. Hon. Dumelo assured the farmers that the Ministry would work to address these issues, including investigating instances of encroachment on government-designated agricultural lands.
In assurance, the Deputy Minister stated; “You know it is a new government. We will investigate the land situation in the area. Because we are resetting Ghana, any government land that has been encroached to jeopardize your farming activities, we will give it back to you. You shouldn’t be afraid,”
Explaining the Feed Ghana Initiative to the farmers, the Deputy Minister stated that the program aims to set up 50 Farmer Service Centers nationwide.
These centers will offer access to farming equipment like tractors and power tillers, distribute improved seeds, and provide start-up capital for farmers.
He also promised to advocate for the establishment of one of these centers in the area spanning Adenta, Ayawaso West Wuogon, and Tema West. He believes the initiative will help make farming more appealing and profitable for both young people and local farmers.
The Feed Ghana Programme, under the Ghana Food Security and Agriculture Productivity (GFSAP) initiative, seeks to transform the agricultural sector by providing essential inputs, supporting mechanization, and improving access to credit and extension services. Urban agriculture has been identified as a critical component of this strategy, particularly given the rising demand for fresh produce in cities.
By investing in urban agriculture, MoFA aims to ensure that even farmers in densely populated municipalities can contribute to Ghana’s food self-sufficiency goals while creating sustainable livelihoods.
