NPP Promises Cocoa Sector Reforms As Dr. Bawumia Receives Farmers Report

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has stirred conversations online after saying a Dr Bawumia-led administration will prioritize the protection of cocoa farmers for better growth.

According to him, the flagbearer of the party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has already begun with measures that will resolve the crisis cocoa farmers are going through.

“Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has started the process of preparing solutions to the cocoa crisis,” part of a post he made on Facebook read.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah’s comments came following the Minority Caucus Select Committee’s tour of cocoa-growing areas and engaged farmers on the ground.

The committee, led by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, put together findings and recommendations based on information from cocoa farmers and presented the report to Dr Bawumia.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, after receiving the report remarked that his administration will develop policy alternatives aimed at solving the ongoing challenges in Ghana’s cocoa sector.

The government on February 12 announced the reduction of the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season, a move which has triggered concerns among stakeholders in the sector.

The NPP leadership since then has been expressing disappointment and engaging cocoa farmers on why the current producer price was unacceptable.

The challenges in the cocoa sector are not peculiar to Ghana, as farmers in neighbouring Cote D’Ivoire have also been struggling to sell.

Reuters reported in February 2026 that cocoa farmers will receive between 800 and 1,000 CFA francs ($1.45–$1.81) per kilogram; significantly lower than the previous main crop price of 2,800 CFA francs per kilogram.

This decision was aimed at helping the world’s largest cocoa producer tackle a growing surplus caused by a slump in global cocoa prices.

Back in Ghana, the largest opposition party believes that the farmers are being short-changed by the government and promises to offer better alternatives when they return to power.

The party’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia said the report would be submitted to the party’s Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security and Agribusiness for technical review and further consultation with experts.

He stated that the committee would be mandated to review the findings and formulate costed policy options to address the concerns raised.

“What I am looking at with the presentation of this report is to take this Select Committee report to the Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security, and Agribusiness.

“We are going to ask this committee to technically review the findings, consult experts in the area, and then bring forward costed policy alternatives for us,” Dr. Bawumia added.
