President John Dramani Mahama has in his latest list of ministerial appointments,  nominated Mr. Eric Opoku, the member of parliament for Asunafo South as the minister designate for food and agriculture, pending parliamentary vetting and approval.

Mr. Eric Opoku, who has been representing the people of Asunafo South for the past one and half decade, has also been the parliamentary Ranking Member on the Food and Agric Committee, and the Privileges Committee & Appointments Committee.

Born on June 5, 1970, Mr. Opoku hails from a town called Sankore in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana. He had his Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the year 2004.

As a professional farmer and an agriculturist from the region that contributes most to the country’s food basket, Hon. Eric Opoku brings a wealth of knowledge in the agricultural sector, and when approved as a minister, will help transform local farming practices through innovative techniques and sustainable methods that could revolutionise food production in Ghana.

He also worked as a teacher with the Ghana Education Service at SDA Primary School in Sankore, from 1997 to 2000. He has also worked with Kuapa Kookoo Limited as the Society Development Secretary from 1998 to 2001.

Prior to his recent nomination as the minister designate for food and agriculture, Mr. Opoku has held the portfolios as a deputy regional minister of Brong Ahafo from 2009 to 2013 under the John Evans Atta Mills, and John Dramni Mahama administrations respectively. He was subsequently appointed as the Ashanti regional minister in the same year.

Mr. Eric Opoku  in 2017 received an award as the best member of parliament for communal and rural development from the Bureau of Research on Governance, Commerce and Administration (BORGCA). This award was given for his contribution to developmental projects in the Asunafo South constituency.  Mr. Eric Opoku is a Christian, and  married with four children.
