A new chapter in Africa’s climate and development journey has begun in Accra with the official launch of Women in Sustainability Africa (WiSA), a transformative movement aimed at empowering African women in climate action, sustainable development, and economic inclusion.

Under this project, 16,000 women will be empowered through the Microfinace and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) to produce different crops as part of government’s transformation agenda in the agricultural sector.

The launch event, held in Accra brought together government officials, civil society actors, women leaders, and sustainability advocates.

WiSA is in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment, the Ministry of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, the League of Extraordinary Women Network, and EIB Network.

In his keynote address, the Minister of State for Climate Change & Sustainability, Issifu Seidu highlighted the importance of gender inclusion in climate leadership. He noted that empowering women is not a women-only issue but a shared mission.

“Men and women must stand side by side. Empowering women is key to unlocking Africa’s full economic potential,” he said.

“Together with MASLOC, under the MASLOC – WiSA Investment Fund, we are going to empower 16,000 women in Sustainable Farming,” Mr. Seidu added.

The minister affirmed that his office remains open for collaboration and partnerships to drive forward the vision and programs under WiSA.

Senior Programme Manager at Lekan Bakare Foundation (LBF), an NGO building capacity for marine ecosystem conservation in Nigeria targeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water, Esther Babatunde stated, “Such a game changer for climate leadership and gender equity in Africa. I look forward to seeing how WiSA drives collaboration, innovation, and progress in its thematics across our continent.”
She pledged her organization’s readiness to support the initiative.

WiSA is a community of women from across the continent and the diaspora, dedicated to fostering positive change through environmental sustainability, social impact, digital and economic empowerment.
