Tomatoes farmers in Tuobodom in the Bono East Region risks losing their investments and are in desperate need of buyers of their produce. According to a resident, Nana Kwame Amoah, there’s bumper harvest of tomatoes in the area but the farmers are struggling to get buyers. COVID-19 had a strong negative impact on the Kusanaba Women’s Group in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region. The group won a significant contract to sell the shea butter they process, but the pandemic depleted their financial resources so they could not purchase raw shea kernel. Thanks to a rural bank with a strategic imperative to lend to more women and support from a local transaction advisor, the women were able to secure financing so they could supply their customers. Two fishermen who were accused of cheating during the Lake Erie Walleye Trail fishing tournament last September – after it was discovered their fish were stuffed with lead weights and fish fillets – will serve jail time for the crime, according to court documents from a Thursday sentencing hearing. Ghana has surpassed Ivory Coast in cocoa production over the half year 2022/23 crop season, according to the latest Cocoa Market Report by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO). As of 31 March 2023, cumulative arrivals of cocoa beans in Ivory Coast were lagging behind previous season levels, while the volume of graded and sealed cocoa beans purchased in Ghana since start of the 2022/23 season was reported at 566,846 tonnes, representing an 18 percent increase from the previous year. The Global Shea Alliance with its NGO partners have started the grafting of shea seedlings to reduce their maturity period from 25 years to three to five years. This forms part of the Ghana Shea Landscape Emission Reductions Project which is aimed at addressing deforestation and the restoration of degraded shea landscapes in the Northern Savanah ecological zone. In all 70 community-based nurseries across the five regions of the north have been engaged to produce different tree spices and shea for planting. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has disclosed efforts by the government to reduce the high cost of fish feed in Ghana by providing cheaper alternatives to imported ones.
